WallPaper Removal: In the past few years, wallpaper removal has become more popular than ever before with the trend to remove wallpaper and repaint or faux finish the walls. There are several types of wallpaper and several different methods of wallpaper removal. Most wallpaper can be removed with one of the following methods:
The method used to remove the wallpaper depends on the type of wallpaper being removed and whether the walls were properly prepared when the wallpaper was originally hung. A good wall primer should have been applied prior to wallpaper installation in order to protect the drywall. Without a good wall primer, the drywall is left unprotected which allows the adhesive being used to penetrate or bury itself into the first couple of layers of the drywall. In this case, any type of wallpaper removal will most likely cause a serious amount of drywall damage and may be more cost effective to paint over the wallpaper rather than attempt to remove it. The preference is to remove the wallpaper whenever possible. However, there are some types of wallpaper that cannot be painted over.
If the choice is to paint over the wallpaper, there are certain steps that should be taken to insure a professional looking job at the completion of the painting process. First, any loose areas should be removed. These areas and seams should be skimmed with a good joint compound and sanded smooth. Lastly, an acrylic or oil primer should be applied prior to the finish coats to completely seal the old wallpaper to insure good adhesion of the finish coats. When this process is done properly, by a professional, it is impossible to see any of the old wallpaper under the newly painted surface. We fully guarantee this process from any future bubbling or peeling.
